Week 1: Storybook Favorites

For this assignment I chose to favorite only storybooks from past Epics of India classes because I had already seen a lot of the old mythology and folklore storybooks (I still skimmed the list though, just for fun. The first storybook I found was Paranormal: The Ayodhya Files. I really loved the personality and personalization of the storybook. It really caught my eye with the whole X-Files vibe. The writing was beautifully done and the pictures worked really well with the storytelling. I, all in all, thought it was an incredibly solid storybook that I loved reading. The introduction was great, the layout was beautiful and the topic was interesting.

The second storybook that caught my eye was the 1000 Ways to Die: Demon Edition storybook. It sadly was one of the more boring storybooks I found visually, but the concept was very fresh and intriguing. I love the TV show 1000 Ways to Die and so I was excited to read this one. While there were many things that I wish had been played up to make the storybook closer to the show, I can’t help denying that it caught my attention nevertheless. Oh, the powers of a title. The introduction did prompt me to read on, but I actually think the names of the ways to die made me want to read mores than the introduction.

The third storybook I found was Player One vs. Maya. Visually unstimulating, but having the only way to see the stories be through a game-like method and without links to the different pages was new and appreciated. I thought it was a great move and it worked well for the storybook concept, obviously. I liked and disliked that the pictures in the story were animated. I think it was a great play on the gaming concept, but the bright colors of the pictures contrasted greatly with the storybook color scheme/layout. It was still a great storybook, what with there being different game options at the ends of the pages, I just think a little more time would have made it that much better.

So clearly, I chose my storybooks kind of vainly through the titles and designs, but the stories in all of the storybooks were really great too. My favorites came from the first storybook for sure (it as a whole took the cake for me).
